Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a treatment that uses your own platelets and growth factors from your blood to rejuvenate your teeth and gums. At Valenta Dental, we perform this treatment to repair bone and gum tissue loss due to gum disease, help heal painful ulcers, and even regrow lost teeth. When used for oral surgery or during dental implant placement, PRP helps stimulate healing and reduces inflammation in the mouth.

How Is PRP Done?

First, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient. Then the blood is mixed with an anticoagulant that stops the blood cells from clotting. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge and spun down to remove the plasma.

Once the plasma is removed, it is placed in a syringe and injected into the area needing treatment. Because it is similar to a blood sample, there is no risk of allergic reaction to the substance or rejection by the body.

When PRP is used to help regenerate tissues, it also increases collagen formation and promotes tissue healing. When blood is drawn from a patient, the platelet-rich plasma naturally separates from the rest of the blood. This pure form of platelets contains proteins called growth factors that stimulate regenerative cells and accelerate the healing process.

The highly concentrated plasma is then injected into the treatment area, where it triggers the body’s natural healing response. This leads to enhanced tissue regeneration and faster recovery for the patient.

The Benefits of PRP

The benefits of platelet-rich plasma are numerous and varied. The main advantage of this procedure lies in the concentration of growth factors in your blood. These growth factors stimulate your body’s natural healing abilities, encourage blood flow to injured tissues, and aid in collagen production. As a result, PRP can help heal wounds more quickly, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve your overall appearance and health.

In addition, because platelets also contain proteins called cytokines, PRP can shorten your recovery time after periodontal treatment. Some procedures require stitches or grafting to promote natural tissue regrowth. Because collagen is needed to heal most types of tissue, the growth factors found in PRP help the body generate new collagen so that you recover quickly following these treatments.

Platelet-rich plasma is safe with minimal risks. Because the blood is harvested from the patient’s body, there is no risk of disease transmission or other complications. For more information, visit Valenta Dental at 1838 Dunlap Ave, Marinette, WI 54143, or call (715) 735-5626.
